Perennial Cover Crops and Water Conservation
Persistent drought in California and changing water use regulations present a challenge to vineyard managers throughout the state of California. The need to use reduced water and try new methods to conserve water can feel overwhelming.
Perennial cover crops offer a solution to these challenges by improving water infiltration and holding capacity in the soil.
Join the Oakville Bluegrass Cooperative on November 21 to learn about the benefits of perennial cover crops for water conservation. Kelsey Fenn, UC Davis PhD Student will share how perennial cover crops can benefit soil water. Learn more about how Oakville bluegrass, a novel perennial cover crop with reverse season dormancy, can help your vineyard conserve water.
We will also be joined by a representative from the Sonoma Groundwater Sustainability Agency to share about efforts in the region to adapt to SGMA regulations and the twenty year groundwater sustainability plan. A short presentation will be followed by a Q&A.

Learn how to use permanent cover crops in your operation
What if there was a way to boost your soil health, prevent erosion, reduce soil compaction, and increase water holding capacity while only planting once?
Oakville bluegrass is a permanent, drought tolerant cover crop that can reduce labor, wear and tear on equipment, fuel usage, and herbicides while preserving your soil for years to come. It falls dormant in summer so it doesn’t compete with your cash crop for water and nutrients. With proper management, it will last ten years or longer.
A recipient of a USDA Grant for Climate-smart Commodities, Oakville Bluegrass Cooperative invites you to an informational session to learn how you can maximize your savings while planting this exciting new cover crop.
Join Mike Morgenfeld, Managing Director of Oakville Bluegrass Cooperative and Amy Riley, Communications Manager to learn more about Oakville bluegrass and how you can save money on installation.
A short presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.
Oakville Bluegrass Cooperative Field Day
Join the Oakville Bluegrass Cooperative for an informative field day event for specialty crop growers! Hear from fellow growers about how permanent no-till cover crop Oakville Bluegrass can:
Improve efficiency
Boost soil health
Increase water infiltration
Reduce operating costs
See soil and root demonstrations, get a chance to see seeder equipment, learn about best practices for cover establishment, and discover how your orchard or vineyard can see a return on investment.
